Yo soy Espanol.

As most of you may know (actually, USA doesn’t care about soccer) Spain beat Paraguay 1-0 Saturday night and I think it was the night that it hit me that I was actually in Spain.

The study abroad kids and I went out for dinner to watch the game and let me tell you, there was no way to not know the game was going on. People with the Spain flag face painted on them, flags worn as capes, jerseys everywhere and car horns beeping nonstop. Or the chants, ‘VIVA ESPANA,’ ‘YO SOY ESPANOL ESPANOL ESPANOL,’ or ‘VILLA MARAVILLA.’ (David Villa is one of their best players and Maravilla means marvelous. Catchy rhyme. Girls, google him, he's really cute.)

After the game was over we were heading back to our hotel and this one-way street had Spaniards lined up on both sides. As a car turned onto this street, the car would honk signaling for the pedestrians that it was okay for them to rock their car. Yes, you read that right. ROCK the car. After about 30 seconds, it was onto the next car. Why can’t we get excited about something like that as country? It was awesome. People were just yelling, celebrating and clapping.

On another note, we went to the beaches near Alicante (Calpe y Albufera) for the weekend. They were beautiful. Heading back I caught myself saying I was happy to be home…. Yep, Valencia is my home. (: Speaking of which, everything is closed on Sundays.. kinda eerie. Even Mercadona (their surpermarket.) Anyway, back to school today because that’s what I’m here for.. right?
