Everyone here (our directors and handbooks) keep emphasizing on how much of a culture shock we’ll probably end up feeling.
Confession: I haven’t felt it yet.
Maybe it’s because in Miami/Hispanics in general do everything that freaks out the Americans. (By Americans I mean people from the South and Midwest.)
Maybe it’s because I’m constantly with Americans speaking English and I’m already used to speaking Spanish in restaraunts/the household.
Maybe it’s because I’m used to Spaniards and Hispanics having no regard for personal space at all. We are constantly touching each other when we talk, even we don’t know each other.. Christ we kiss on the cheek hello. I have to remind then that when we go out people are going to touch them and get in there face and to not yell rape.
You can tell this makes my fellow classmates feel.. shocked culturally.
The way they feel is pretty much how I felt when I got to Columbus.
So truthfully the only thing I miss from America right now is.. get ready for this.. the food.
Spain, especially Valencia, is known for its’ seafood and paella. I do not touch seafood.
Also, locals here have an obsession with bread, cheese and ham and any combination of it.
Breakfast is usually served here at 8-9 morning and all it is, is usually coffee and a pastry. This is a problem, I LOVE huge breakfasts’.
Lunch is then around 2-3 (why do they wait so long to eat in between meals) and this is usually the biggest meal. Soup, main dish and a desert. Afterwards, it’s very common for people to take a siesta (nap), hence stores shut down till around 4.
Dinner is then served around 9-10 and is also small.
My stomach doesn’t like this one bit.
